Abstract

1,191,323. Spandex fibres treated with or containing polysiloxanes. DOW CORNING CORP. 21 April, 1967 [11 May, 1966], No. 18382/67. Heading B5B. [Also in Divisions C3 and D1] A spandex fibre is treated and reacted with a lubricating finish which is or contains a polysiloxane having the general formula wherein R and R<SP>1</SP>, which may be the same or different, are each a radical attached to a silicon atom via a non-hydrolysable bond and containing at least one substituent that is reactive with the spandex fibre, each n and n<SP>1</SP>, which may be the same or different, is zero or one, x is an integer, y is zero or an integer, and the ratio of silicon atoms substituted by two methyl radicals to silicon atoms substituted by one or two methyl radicals and one R or R<SP>1</SP> radical is in the range of 15/1 to 300/1. In the polysiloxane the radical R and/or R<SP>1</SP> may contain an isocyanate substituent and the ratio may be in the range of 30/1 to 100/1. The polysiloxane may have the formula or the formula The finish applied to the spandex fibre may include, as part of the finish, a mineral oil and/or a waxy siloxane polymer containing dimethylsiloxane units and methyl alkyl siloxane units (the alkyl radicals containing an average of at least 14 carbon atoms). Spandex fibres may be made by mixing a spinning solution containing a spandex fibre-forming material or a melt of such a material with a minor proportion of a polysiloxane having the general formula defined in Claim 1, and spinning the solution or melt to form spandex fibres in which the polysiloxane forms part of the fibre.
