Abstract

1,190,589. Wells &c. ROCKWELL MFG. CO. 27 July, 1967 [15 Aug., 1966], No. 34644/ 67. Heading E1F. An underwater well is completed by installing a conductor 20 together with a wellhead 21 and a marine-conductor 23, installing a casing 30 by drilling a hole and suspendling and cementing the casing in the hole with a riser 31 supported by the casing, successively installing casings 50, 70, 90 with their respective risers 51, 71, 91, and completing the well for surface or .underwater production, or for permanent or temporary abandonment. The surface completion is made on top of the risers which extend above the water-line. The underwater completion is made after removing the risers the marine conductor being removed after installing the tubing head and running tubing. Casing hangers 32, 52, 72, 92 have passages 36 55a. 61, 81 for upward flow of cementing fluid, and are attached to joints on their respective risers 31, 51. 71, 91 by shear pins and quick release fastenings comprising series of interrupted rings. To remove the risers for underwater completion or abandonment the risers are partially rotated after shearing the pins, and then lifted clear of the well. For abandonment the risers 71, 91 are removed, packing 100 is releasably fired between the casing hangers 72, 92, the riser 51 is removed, packing 140 is releasably fixed between the casing hangers 52, 72, the riser 31 is removed, a well cap 160 is releasably fixed to the casing hanger 32 and a diver substitutes a seal ring 165 for the marine conductor. If the well is to be completed on the bottom a tubing head (170, Fig. 5 not shown) replaces the packing 100, and the packing 140 is replaced by packing (140a), the tubing head having a side outlet (175) and supporting tubing (183). If the well is permanently abandoned all casings are plugged and cut below the mudline after removal of the risers, and the hangers with their cut casings parts are removed with the marine conductor. A tool (Fig. 14, not shown) for inserting and releasing the packing comprises a guide head, a plug, and a packing engaging member.
