Abstract

[Also in Division G2] Light from a lamp 2 is directed by a condenser 4 through a graticule 6 carrying, e. g. a pattern of lines, to a symmetrical double prism beam splitter, from which the split beams are reflected by parallel mirrors 10 through objectives 12 to interest at a point P lying in a datum plane R. If a reflecting surface is placed in the plane R, the split beams will be reflected back along each other's incident paths to the beam splitter 8 which then directs them along an exit path axis A to an objective 18 of an eye-piece and to a photo-electric detector. If the reflecting surface lies in the plane S, a distance d from the plane R, the return paths and the exit path will be laterally displaced a distance l, directly proportional to the distance d. If the surface 5 is inclined to the plane R, the reflected split beams will produced a pair of separate images of the graticule having their lateral spacing determined by the obliquity of all surfaces. Thus the apparatus can be used for determining the distance and/or the obliquity of the reflecting surface 5 relative to the datum plane R. A refraction block 22 is provided to align the image of the graticule 6 with a graticule 16 in the eye-piece, the block being adjusted by means of a lever 24 rotated by a micrometer drum 30. A fine setting may be derived from the photo-electric cell 20.
