Abstract

1,189,746. Photoreactive TiO 2 . NATIONAL LEAD CO. 7 June, 1968 [26 June, 1967], No. 27341/68. Heading C1N. A photoreactive anatase TiO 2 having an average particle size of 100-500 Š, a surface area of 60-250 m<SP>2</SP>/gm., a sulphur content of 0À03-0À3%, a mixture content of 2-10%, and a loss in reflectance of at least 5 units in 2 mins., is prepared by hydrolysing a Ti sulphate-Fe sulphate solution, filtering, bleaching, and washing the hydrous TiO 2 to remove Fe salts, treating the TiO 2 (which still contains 5-15% H 2 SO 4 ) in aqueous slurry, with NH 4 OH, (NH 4 ) 2 CO 3 or NH 3 gas until the pH is at least 6, washing until the per cent of S is 0À03-0À3%, drying at 250-700‹ C. until the individual particles are 100-500 A, and grinding the aggregates to powder The sulphate solution may be obtained by digesting a TiFe ore with H 2 SO 4 and dissolving the cake in H 2 O or acid. Bleaching may be effected with H 2 SO 4 and Al metal.
