Abstract

1,189,448. Ammonium nitrate fertilizers. FISONS FERTILIZERS Ltd. 13 Sept., 1967 [19 Sept., 1966], No. 41687/66. Headings C1A and C1B. Ammonium nitrate prills are formed by prilling a mixture of molten ammonium nitrate and finely divided clay, which clay is kaolin, attapulgite, talc, montmorillonite, or a mixture thereof. The amount added is 0À1 to 10% by weight relative to the NH 4 NO 3 . The clay may be mixed with a magnesium or aluminium salt capable of forming a hydrate with the water content of the molten NH 4 NO 3 . The mixture may be prilled by conventional methods, or preterably by allowing molten droplets to fall through a cooling tower containing a dustbearing gas zone, which may be static or flow in countercurrent to the droplets at a rate of 1À5 to 3 feet/sec. The dust may be magnesium oxide or carbonate, attapulgite, talc, calcium, montmorillonite or a mixture of these, of particle size less than 75 microns, and used in a concentration of 0À01 to 0À25 lb./cu. foot. If desired, the droplets may be allowed to fall into a fluidized bed containing previously formed granules of NH 4 NO 3 , after passing through the dust-bearing gas-zone.
