Odometers.-An attachment to ploughs, mowing and reaping machines, and other agricultural cultivating-apparatus, consists of an odometer wheel running upon the ground surface and adapted to be raised out of action when the cultivating element of the apparatus becomes ineffective. Fig. 1 shows the frame of a multiple-share plough, having at the rear an odometer wheel j carried upon an arm k of spring steel pivoted to a bracket l upon the plough frame, adapted to be raised from the surface of the ground upon which it runs when the share-adjusting lever d is depressed, for which purpose a wire m, fixed at one end of the frame a and moved by a lever, passes over the pulleys n, o upon a frame a carried by the fore wheels b and a third pulley p which is adjustable. The wire ends in a length of chain r, any desired link of which may be placed, for suitable adjustment, over a hook s upon a projection k from the wheel-carrying arm, a spring t being in parallel with the effective part of the chain, so as to provide within limits a yielding connexion. The counter is actuated by a pin w, Fig. 3, upon the odometer wheel adapted to engage at each revolution with a star wheel v, which is removable in order that wheels with suitable numbers of teeth may be employed according to the width of ground that is being cultivated. Two actuating-pins w may also be provided upon the odometer wheel for a similar purpose, and the pins may be adjustable radially. The selected star-wheel is fixed to a spindle x carrying a dog for actuating the counter within a casing u, and suitably mounted in a sleeve z and barrel-member 3 so that it may carry one or more of the alternative star-wheels 4 for interchange with the actuating-wheel by reassembly of the parts. A light spring detent is provided for the actuating-wheel. Modified arrangements include actuation by continuous gearing from the odometer wheel or from one of the ordinary wheels of a plough with means for disabling the driving connexion at will.
