Abstract

1,189,361. Surgical prostheses. CESKOSLOVENSKA AKADEMIE VED. 28 April, 1967 [4 May, 1966], No. 19611/67. Heading A5R. A prosthesis for a tubular organ of the human body comprises an internally-smooth non-porous tube of polymeric material reinforced by a tubular insert of textile material, the polymeric material being formed from at least one monomethacrylate of a glycol or a polyhydric alcohol and up to 2% by weight of a cross-linking agent which is soluble in the monomeric mixture and which has at least two polymerizable double bonds. The prosthesis may be prepared by applying the glycol or polyhydric alcohol monomethacrylate/cross-linking agent mixture to the tubular insert of textile material and then polymerizing the applied mixture. The steps of applying the monomeric mixture and polymerizing may be repeated at least once, so that the polymeric material is built up in layers. The tube may include (e.g. between two layers of the polymeric material thereof) a biologically active substance, for example an antibiotic agent. The insert of textile material is preferably knitted from physiologically inert synthetic fibres (e.g. fibres of rayon, polyacrylonitrile, or polyester such as polyethylene terephthalate).
