A buckle device for receiving a strap adjustable with respect thereto, is a first element 10 in the form of a plate having an opening 14 therein, and a second element 15 comprising a bar spanning said opening in the first element, the said two elements being interconnected for relative sliding movement in a direction transverse to the bar, by means of opposite members of the second element extending transverse to the bar and engaging in oppositely disposed grooves of the first element, to enable movement of the bar towards and away from a co-operating edge of said opening between which and the bar a strap can be clamped, the said transverse members of the second element comprising projections 16, 17 extending from the bar in a direction away from the said edge, and the second element being loaded by a spring 20 in a direction towards said edge the spring being stressed between the ends of said projections and an abutment 19 which is fixed with respect the first element. As shown the spring is a leaf spring and the buckle part has a tongue with apertures 11 for engagement by the other part of the buckle. A cover (not shown) clips over the element 10. In a modification the element 15 has two bars and the element 10 has two openings 14 so that two straps can be attached to the element 10. A wire spring can be substituted for the leaf spring.
