Abstract

In a process for the preparation of p-cresol isoprene is reacted with a vinyl ester at temperatures between 150‹ and 250‹ C. and at a pressure of 10-50 atmospheres, the reaction product obtained is saponified and the cyclic alcohol formed then catalytically dehydrogenated. In an example, isoprene is reacted with vinyl acetate to obtain 1-methyl-cyclohex-1-en- 4-ol-acetate which is saponified with methanolic potassium hydroxide and the free alcohol is dehydrogenated over platinized asbestos.
