Abstract

1,188,520. Two part couplings. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. 16 Oct., 1967 [28 Oct., 1966], No. 48427/66. Heading H2E. Connection to a flexible printed circuit 11, having a conductive layer 12 sandwiched between insulating layers 13, is made by forming a hole 15 in an area 14 of the conductive layer exposed on both faces, the exposed area being provided with slits 16 to form flaps 17, so that when a pin 18 having a conical end 19 is inserted into the hole, the flaps 17 are electrically engaged with the conical surface of the pin. Pins 18 may constitute the terminals of a vehicle ignition switch which is secured by an integral threaded spigot and nut to a facia panel on which the printed circuit is located (Fig. 3, not shown). In another embodiment (Figs. 4, 5, not shown) the pin includes a cylindrical shank (32) having an outwardly directed flange (33) in one end with a concave shoulder (35) being formed between the shank (32) and the flange (33) while the other end of the shank is provided with a tapered portion (34). The flexible printed circuit in which the pin is to be engaged is placed over a base (36) having a tapering bore (37) and an area of the flexible printed circuit comprising flaps exposed on one side only lies above the bore. When the pin is inserted through the exposed area, the flaps, which have previously been bent down out of the plane of the printed circuit, are trapped between the pin and the bore of the base.
