Abstract
1,187,973. Refining metals. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Sept. 20, 1967 [Sept. 23, 1966], No.42550/66. Heading C7D. Apparatus for refining molten metals consists of a container for the metal, a tundish receiving metal therefrom and discharging it in a freely falling stream into a reception vessel, and one or more refining gas discharge nozzles adjacent to and directed towards the path of the falling stream, the nozzles being angularly adjustable to vary the angle at which the gas streams strike the metal, whereby the dispersion of the latter may be controlled when the gas flow rate is varied. As shown in Fig. 1, metal is tapped from ladle 1 into tundish 3, which discharges it between gas discharge nozzles 12 into vessel 5 provided with hood 6 and gas offtake 8. Fluxes are supplied by dispenser 40. The metal may be discharged with a narrow rectangular cross-section or through a plurality of small orifices; a large area: volume ratio may also be obtained by using a nozzle of scallopedged cross-section. In the form of construction shown in Fig. 4 gas distributer blocks each having one or more discharge nozzles are pivoted at A on supports 14; associated with each block is a worm-wheel 17 driven by worm-gears 16 mounted on telescopic shafts 18. The supports 14 are mounted on slides 19 so that their spacing may be adjusted by threaded drive shafts 20. An alternative arrangement for treating a stream of metal of circular cross-section, is illustrated in Fig. 5 (not shown).
