Abstract

1,187,420. Selective signalling. GENERAL MOTORS Ltd. 28 Nov., 1968 [30 Nov., 1967], No. 54490/67. Heading G4H. [Also in Division G1] The speed of a motor vehicle is measured by an 8-pole magnet mounted on the output shaft of the vehicle, associated with a reed switch which is thus closed eight times per revolution, each closure short-circuiting a capacitor C1 (Fig. 1) through diode D1. When the switch is open, capacitor C1 is charged to the battery voltage via R1, T1, T2, the charging pulse, of constant amplitude and duration, being amplified by transistors T1, T2 and fed to a coil L1, mounted perpendicularly to a coil L2 fed with a constant current, whereby a magnetic pointer (not shown) lines itself up with the direction of the resultant flux which is indicative of the average current through coil L1 and therefore proportional to the pulse frequency and the vehicle speed. The pulses fed to coil L1 are also used to charge a capacitor C2. After say 200 pulses the charge on C2 discharges through a uni-junction transistor T3 to feed a pulse to coil L3 of a stepping motor coupled to an odometer pointer.
