Abstract

1,186,838. Electric motors. BOWMAR INSTRUMENT CORP. 2 July, 1968, No. 31555/68. Heading H2A. To enable the permanent magnet -rotor 46 of a stepping motor for displaying digital data to be rotated through 180 degrees by reverse energization of one of a plurality of stator coils 44, the rotor carries a pair of polepieces 64, 66 at opposite ends of a diameter 68 displaced by an angle #, Fig. 7, of between 5 degrees and 25 degrees from the magnetic axis 62 of .the rotor. In the embodiment shown, five coils 44 are provided each spanning five poles of ten-pole stator and therefore on energization of a coil the magnetic axis 62 aligns itself with the centre one of the associated poles. On de-energization of the coil, the permanent magnet flux seeks the lowest reluctance path to the stator and redistributes itself through the polepieces 64, 66 causing the rotor to rotate slightly until they are aligned with said centre pole. The resulting slight displacement of the magnetic axis enables torque to be exerted on the rotor if the said coil is energized in the reverse direction. The rotor carries a drum 28 on which the digital data is arranged for display through a window 26 in a two-part casing 14, 16.
