Benzene is freed from thiophene impurity by contact with a polyoxymethylene in an amount at least sufficient to react with all the thiophene present, in the presence of a strong acid, and removing the resinous product so formed. Preferably, tri- or tetra-oxymethylene is used in the presence of sulphuric acid.
