Abstract

1,186,407. Explosive-actuated fastener driving tools. U.S.M. CORP. 11 July, 1967 [12 July, 1966; 9 Nov., 1966], No. 31816/67. Heading B4C. An explosive-actuated device for driving fasteners, such as nails 26, into hard material comprises a barrel 14 having an anvil 32 at its breech end which is movable between open and closed positions, a vent 38 communicating a chamber for an impact-explosive charge with the bore of the barrel, and a firing mechanism having a pin 44 adapted to strike the charge mounted on the anvil. The anvil 32 is held against the end of the barrel by means of a member 30 in which a sleeve 40 is mounted. The firing pin is mounted in a holder 42 which is slidable in the sleeve 40 and carried by a member 52; a striker 56 is slidably mounted in the latter member and loaded by a spring 58. In operation, when the muzzle end of the barrel is pressed against a workpiece S, the member 52 is moved rearwardly as shown in Fig. 1 to compress the spring 58. Upon depressing a trigger 66 a sear 76 is released from a slot 72 in the member 52, thereby allowing the striker to impact the firing pin and so fire the explosive charge 36, the explosive gases acting on a plunger 18. In order to re-load the device, the barrel is pulled outwardly taking with it the member 52 by means of pivoted levers 86 so as to allow the sear to re-engage the slot 72. When the position shown in Fig. 3 is reached, the levers 86 drop into a recess 99 formed in a housing 10 thereby allowing the barrel to be completely withdrawn for reloading. In a modification, the chamber for the explosive charge is formed in a recess (128, Fig. 8) provided in a shroud 120.
