Abstract

1,185,622. Heating and cooling garments; boots &c. J. C. BETTS. 28 June, 1967 [28 March, 1966; 28 April, 1966; 6 May, 1966], Nos. 13649/66, 18626/66 and 20206/66. Headings A3B and A3V. A garment for heating or cooling the body e.g. a suit or undersuit for use by divers, aircrew and the like, is made from at least two panels, each panel consisting of two layers joined along at least part of their periphery and at predetermined surface regions to form cavities, and includes means for interconnecting the cavities and inlet and outlet means for circulating heated or cooled fluid e.g. water, through the cavities. As described a one piece suit is made up of front, rear, leg and arm panels, each panel consisting of two layers 1, 2 of textile fabric, rubber, plastics or foam materials or combinations thereof, preferably nylon lined foam neoprene. The layers 1, 2 are joined around their edges by a seam 3 except at the points where they are connected to adjacent panels by tubular inserts 8. The layers 1, 2 are also joined along seams 3<1> to form cavities or channels 4 through which the fluid flows as shown by the arrows in Fig. 1. The layers of the leg panels are joined at points 5 to give a quilted effect and to prevent undue distention of the cavities. The seams 3, 3<1> and joints 5 may be produced by clips, staples, stitching, adhesive bonding, welding or vulcanizing. The suit is provided with an inlet 14, an outlet 15, a relief valve 18 which can also be used to drain the suit and a valve 19 to vent air from the suit. The invention can also be applied to the manufacture of other heated garments e.g. suits made in separate sections, bootees, gloves and head coverings.
