Abstract

1,185,453. Multiphase catalysis. MONSANTO CO. 20 Feb., 1968 [20 Feb., 1967] No. 8275/68. Heading B1E..[Also in Division C2] A multiphase catalyst comprises a porous solid carrier having dispersed therein a liquid catalytic component wherein the liquid loading or the said multiphase catalyst is in the range of from 0.10 to 0.80 cm<SP>3</SP> of the liquid catalytic component per cm<SP>3</SP> of the said porous solid carrier. Suitable carriers include pumice, Al 2 O 3 gel, SiO 2 gel, SiO 2 Al 2 O 3 gel, MgO, diatomaceous earth, bauxite, TiO 2 , ZrO 2 , clays, CaO, MgSiO 3 , SiC, C, zeolites, solid foams and porous organic polymers such as ion exchange resins, polystyrne, polycarbonate, polyurethane, polyethylene and polypropylene. The liquid phase catalyst is inorganic, organic or organometallic and may include such metals as Cr, Mn, Ti, V, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Zr, Nb, Mo, Ru, Rh, Pd, Ag, Ca, Hf, Ta, W, Re, Or, Ir, Pt, Au, Hg, Al, Ga, In, Th, Ge, Sn, Pb, Sb, Bi, the rare earths, U, Th and alkali and alkaline earth metals, as well as the non-metals B, S, Se and Te. A multitude of organic and inorganic liquids are specified, as well as preferred pore volumes, mesh sizes and surface areas of the supports. In the Examples a variety of different catalysts are employed and many organometallic complexes, especially of Rh, are specified.
