Abstract

1,185,452. Variable-speed friction gear. J. R. PANTON and A. WEBB, [trading as PANTON & WEBB]. 20 Feb., 1969 [20 Feb., 1968], No. 8213/68. Heading F2D. In an infinitely variable friction gear having a pair of coaxial driving and driven discs 1, 3 between which a double-ended roller 10 is freely rotatable on a transverse inclined shaft 13 to bear at one end 11 against the disc 1 and at the other end 12 against the other disc 3 and is transversely moved by a roller carrier 15 threaded on a spindle 20 externally rotated for ratio change, the roller 10 is solely supported by the shaft 13 in open shallow V-shaped cam recesses 25, 26 in support arms 16, 17 of the carrier 15 whereby the drive transmitting pressure between the roller and discs is automatically varied proportionally according to applied torque. Resilient rings 31 located in grooves 30 at each end of the spindle 13 take up manufacturing tolerances and provide an initial pre-loading of the roller ends 11, 12 against the respective discs 1, 3.
