Abstract
1,184,338. Welding by fusion. MITSUBISHI JUKOGYO K.K. 11 April, 1967 [12 April. 1966], No. 16636/67. Heading B3R. A method of forming a welded joint between component parts 1 of a pressure vessel comprises providing opposed groove faces on the parts to be welded, applying to both faces a built up cladding layer 2 of metal resistant to hydrogen embrittlement and to hardening by the heat of welding, annealing the separate parts, welding them together with weld metal 3 at the root, i.e. inner portion this metal 3 being the same as in the built-up layer 2 and finally completing the weld with metal 4 resistant to hardening by the heat of welding. Annealing of the pressure vessel as a whole is obviated. Where the pressure vessel (Fig. 2, not shown) is of the multilayer wall type the built-up weld layer which is resistant to hydrogen embrittlement may be limited to the inner cylinder and a built up layer may or may not be applied to the outer portions of the vessel wall the metal of which is the same as that used in the outer wall portions. Suitable weld metals resistant to hydrogen embrittlement and to hardening are austenitic or high chrome stainless steels while a suitable weld metal not hardened by welding is a low alloy molybdenum steel.
