Abstract
1,184,244. Pyridines. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 31 Oct., 1968 [23 Aug., 1967], No. 38870/67. Heading C2C. Pyridines and 2-hydrocarbyl-substituted pyridines, e.g. α-picoline, are prepared by heating an N-alkyl pyrrole (or a tertiary amine precursor thereof) with iodine in the vapour phase at a temperature in the range 300-800‹ C. As a modification of the process, a 2-alkyl pyrrole may be used as starting material. The reaction is preferably carried out in the presence of an inorganic oxide, e.g. an oxide of calcium, nickel, aluminium or silicon. In the examples: (a) N-methyl pyrrole is converted to pyridine; (b) N-methyldiethylamine is converted to pyridine and trace amounts of α- and #-picoline and (c) triethylamine is converted to α-picoline and pyridine.
