Abstract

1,184,138. Sensitized silver halide photographic emulsion. CHEMISCHES LABORATORIUM FRITZ-WALTER LANGE. G. m. b. H. Oct.25, 1968 [Nov. 3, 1967], No. 50782/68. Heading G2C. The invention comprises a silver halide photographic emulsion containing, as a sensitizer, gold (I) mercapto glucose having the formula I: The emulsion preferably contains 1À5 mg. to 150 mg. of sensitizer per g. atom of silver. This emulsion may be prepared by precipitating the silver halide in the presence of gelatine by reaction of a water-soluble halide with aqueous silver nitrate, ripening the emulsion and chilling to set the emulsion, washing and remelting the emulsion and adding the sensitizer during a second, chemical ripening stage. Gold (I) mercapto glucose in the emulsion during the chemical ripening stage produces a substantial increase in sensitivity with extremely little fogging; it does not form an insoluble compound with hydroquinone and can therefore be used in emulsions containing hydroquinone as a developing agent; it does not form an insoluble product with silver chloride and can therefore be used in silver chloride emulsions; and there is no fading of the latent image in the exposed emulsion as there is with the gold rhodanide complex.
