Abstract

1,184,031. Motor vehicles; amphibious vehicles; motor cycles; adjustable wheels. G. ARIENTI, and D. ARIENTI. 8 Jan., 1968 [21 Jan., 1967], 989/68. Headings B7A, B7D, B7E, B7H and B7V. A motor vehicle comprises a steerable wheel 31 and a driven wheel 32 arranged in the longitudinal line of symmetry of the vehicle, and a pair of symmetrically arranged side wheels 33, 34 raisable off the ground. The front wheel is steered by means of a handle 1 which also acts to raise the side wheels. The steering shaft 35 is articulatedly jointed at 3 and its upper portion passes through a guide tube 4a forming part of a bent lever 4 pivoted at 2, said lever having a rearwardly extending arm 4b. Arm 4b is pivotally connected by means of a rod 6 to a forked member 5 hinged at 37 and carrying at its ends the side wheels. By moving handle 1 to position 1<SP>1</SP> the side wheels will be raised. The handle 1 can be set in any required position by allowing a toothed catch 7 to engage a rack 39. The catch 7 is controlled by a flexible cable 9 connected with a lever 8 mounted on handle 1. In a modification the side wheels are raised by axial forward movement of a steering wheel 18 and its steering shaft 50. The shaft 50 is connected with rod 6 by a pivoted forked member 21 and inward movement of the shaft with respect to an annularly grooved rod 22 will raise the side wheels. Pivoted catches 23 lock the shaft 50 by being caused to engage the grooves by spring 53. The catches are released by inward movement of a cylinder 54 using lever 55. The track of the side wheels 33, 34 may be adjustable by mounting them each on a support 16 attached to the vehicle chassis by means of the arms 12, 15 of an articulated quadrilateral. Each arm 12 is connected with the rod of a piston within cylinder 13, this cylinder being supplied with fluid for track adjustment by means of a hand pump 14. The vehicle may be made amphibious by rendering the chassis waterproof and finning the rear wheel 32 so it acts as an axial centrifugal pump, expelling water in a direction C. The device for raising the side wheels may alternatively be automatic, pneumatic, hydraulic or electrical.
