Abstract

[Also in Divisions G3 and G5] A reel servo circuit 34 or 36 controls a reel motor 38 or 42 in accordance with the length of the tape loop in a vacuum buffer column 18 or 22 in the usual way but also responds to signals from detectors 28, 40 indicative of the directions of tape feed by the capstan 24 and the reel 12 or 14, so that when the capstan and the reel are both feeding tape into the buffer column or both withdrawing tape from the column, the polarity of the signal energizing the reel motor is reversed irrespective of the length of loop in the column. A suitable logic circuit is described (Fig. 2).
