Abstract

1,183,987. Opening tow and de-registering crimps. CELANESE CORP. 16 Aug., 1967 [12 Sept., 1966], No. 37551/67. Headings DID and D1F. Apparatus for opening a tow and deregistering the crimps in adjacent filaments comprises a banding jet, a pair of tow-opening rolls forming a nip between which the tow passes, one of said rolls having an interrupted surface and one being driven, a pair of smooth rolls mounted for free rotation on parallel axes between the banding jet and the opening device, and engaging opposite faces of the tow, one of the smooth rolls being carried by a fixing mounting and the second by a movable mounting permitting it to be moved towards or away from the first mentioned smooth roll while maintaining parallel the axes of the rolls, and an air cylinder for resiliently urging the second smooth roll towards the first smooth roll with a predetermined force. The movable mounting comprises a pair of arms which support the ends of the roller, which are connected by a cross-bar attached to the diaphragm of the air cylinder, and which are movably supported by a pair of ball bushings comprising three or more sets of balls movable in races parallel to the arms. Springs are provided to urge the movable mounting away from the fixed mounting for tow to be inserted between the rolls. There may be more than one pair of gripping rolls, each pair preferably comprising a grooved upper roll having the grooves in one half of the roll helically threaded in the opposite sense to the grooves in the other half, and a driven rubber-surfaced lower roll. The filaments may be made into a cigarette filter rod, or, spread to a wide width, may be cross-lapped to form a batting to be used for stuffing pillows. The filaments may be made of a cellulose derivative, a polyamide, a polyester, a polyolefin, an acrylic polymer or copolymer, an oxymethylene polymer, or a vinyl polymer or copolymer.
