Abstract

1,183,735. Brake applying mechanism; fluid-pressure brakes. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. 13 July, 1967 [8 Aug., 1966], No. 32193/67. Addition to 1,157,222. Headings F2E and F2F. In an improvement or modification of the invention claimed in Specification 1,157,222 in which the linkage from the brake pedal lever 84<SP>1</SP> to the valve operating rod 66<SP>1</SP> of a servo piston (not shown) includes a first lever 78<SP>1</SP> to which is pivoted a second lever 120, the latter being pivoted at its lower end to a fixed pivot 122. Initial movement of the brake pedal lever 84<SP>1</SP> urges a resilient spring loaded push-pull link 102 to the left to rotate the lever 78<SP>1</SP> in a clockwise direction to pivot about the pin 118. At the same time the brake pedal force attempts to rotate the two levers 78<SP>1</SP> and 120 about the stationary pivot pin 122 and since a sleeve 92 is prevented from rightward movement by an insert 96 secured to the valve housing 56<SP>1</SP>, the upper end of the lever 78<SP>1</SP> and pin 90 now acts as a secondary fulcrum to permit clockwise rotation of the lever 78<SP>1</SP> to result in a leftward arcuate swing movement of the second lever 120 and the lower portion of the lever 78<SP>1</SP> as the pin 118 moves leftwardly to cause a leftward movement of the rod 66<SP>1</SP> until the clearance between the pivot pin 90 and the eyelet 98 is taken up. The travel permitted by the clearance is sufficient to cause the rod 66<SP>1</SP> to actuate the vacuum servomotor (not shown) which causes a leftward movement of the valve housing 56<SP>1</SP> so that both levers 78<SP>1</SP> and 120 are moved counterclockwise about the stationary pivot pin 122 and the brakes are applied. Should a failure occur in the power system continued depression of the brake pedal lever 84 by the vehicle operator will immediately cause a leftward force to be applied through a link 82<SP>1</SP> to the pin 118 to pivot both the levers 120 and 78<SP>1</SP> about the stationary pivot 122 to move actuating rod 66<SP>1</SP> the desired amount to mechanically actuate the brake master-cylinder piston (not shown). A third lever 126 is adapted to be actuated by a rod 136 manually by the driver which effects movement of the levers 78<SP>1</SP> and 120 about the pivot pin 122 to cause a movement of the plunger 66<SP>1</SP> sufficient to initiate movement of the servo piston.
