Abstract
1,183,650. Pattern recognition; square root, exponential circuits. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 16 Oct., 1968 [13 Nov., 1967], No. 49072/68. Headings G4G and G4R. [Also in Division G2] In pattern recognition apparatus, the unknown pattern is correlated with known patterns, signals from each correlation being raised as exponents to a constant to give signals which are summed for each known pattern separately, the largest sum being detected to identify the unknown pattern. An unknown pattern is correlated optically with masks of known patterns, the light from each correlation being detected by a respective 3 x 3 matrix of photocells. The outputs of each matrix are fed through non-linear diodes to a respective summing network. The outputs of the summing networks are compared, the largest identifying the pattern. Each non-linear diode produces an output equal to a constant (e.g. the base of natural logarithms) raised to its input as exponent. The masks of known patterns may be in hologram form in which case each photocell output is square-rooted (to get from intensity to amplitude) before being raised as exponent to the constant. Fig. 5 shows a circuit for this, comprising a photo-detecting junction 62B (input), an insulated-gate field-effect transistor 78 for the square-rooting, and a non- linear diode 76 for the exponentiation.
