Abstract
1,183,567. Oil seals. TIMKEN ROLLER BEARING CO. 30 Aug., 1968, No. 41664/68. Heading F2B. A lip-type oil seal forming a primary contact area 44 in which exists a continuous lubricant film has patterned depressions which extend obliquely from the contact area and are defined by edge walls 37 presented at acute angles with respect to the direction of relative movement at the contact area so as to function as impellers for returning leakage emitted from the lubricant film. The seal may be gripped to the shaft by ribs 24 and a pair of lips having P.T.F.E. tips 34, 35 urged apart by a spring 33 into sliding contact with walls 22, 29. The depressions at the ends 36 of the lips may be triangular to function for both directions of rotation or formed with parallel grooves for one direction only, the depressions being arranged to form lobe areas 39 between the depressions and helical trailing edge walls 37. In operation, leakage enters the space between the lobes and the walls to form an unstable fluid film which is subjected to shear and rupture causing a portion to adhere to the lobes, a portion to adhere to the walls and freed lubricant particles to enter the depressions for engagement by the trailing edge walls 37.
