Novel compounds (I) in which A is H, halo, alkyl, alkoxy, haloalkyl or cyano; X is a methylene group or a heteroatom; B is H or alkyl; Y is -CH(CH 3 )-CH 2 -, -CH(CH 3 )-CO- or -CH 2 -CH(CH 3 )-; R and R<SP>1</SP> are H or alkyl or together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached form a heterocyclic radical which may contain a further heteroatom and acid addition salts thereof are prepared by (a) when Y is reacting the N unsubstituted heterocycle with a compound wherein Hal is a halogen atom: (b) when Y is -CH(CH 3 )-CH 2 - or -CH 2 -CH(CH 3 )- reducinga compound (I) in which Y is -CH(CH 3 )- CO- or -CO-CH(CH 3 )- respectively; or (c) when Y is -CH(CH 3 )-CH 2 - or -CH 2 - CH(CH 3 )- condensing an alkali metal derivative (VII) with a halo-propylamine to give a mixture of isomers (I) in which Y is -CH(CH 3 )-CH 2 - or -CH 2 -CH(CH 3 )- respectively, followed in (a), (b) or (c), where necessary, by salt formation. Pharmaceutical compositions comprise a compound (I) in association with a carrier or diluent for oral or parenteral application and are effective as anti-depressants, stimulants, anoexigenies, anti-histaminics, anti-spasmodics, sedatives and hypnotics.
