Abstract

1,183,389. Developing electrostatic images. ADDRESSOGRAPHMULTIGRAPH CORP. May 30, 1967 [June 6, 1966], No.24936/67. Heading G2H. Apparatus for applying developer to an electrostatically chargedmember includes means 34, 36, Fig. 1, for producing a magnetic field having a region 18 of greater flux density, a supply of developer in the field but outside said region, a carrier member 14 movable through the developer and then through said region of greater flux where it takes up a brush configuration, means for supporting the charged member 50 against the formed brush and levelling means 22 to even out the developer on the carrier member, said levelling means including a plurality of surface portions selectively engageable with layer of developer on the carrier member. As shown in Fig. 1 the levelling means is a rotatable rod 22 of circular or polygonal section, the angular position of which is selected, fixed and indicated via a ratchet at one end thereof, when its used surface is too spoiled. The carrier member is a rotating drum 14 which picks up the developer 16 comprising metal particles, e.g. iron filings, and toner and moves them into contact with the charged member 20 at the point of greater flux density 18 where the carrier member forms a brush-like configuration. The magnetic field is formed by a bar magnet 34 and a soft iron piece 36 which are disposed within the drum, and a magnetic cleaning assembly 40 removes particles from the back of the charged member 20. The developed image may be fixed by fusing. A corona discharge wire 38 prevents adherence of developer to the non-image areas of the sheet 20.
