Abstract

1,183,174. Rotary mowers. MASON & PORTER Ltd. 9 April, 1968 [10 April, 1967], No. 17038/68. Heading A1F. A blade for mowers having a drive - shaft extending vertically downwards, is formed from a strip of metal either rectangular or scimitar in shape such that a channel section midway along the blade increases its strength and downward sloping portions provided with cutting edges improve the efficiency of the mower. The channel portion 6 of the blade is formed by bending both the long sides of the strip of metal for a suitable distance upwardly. Beyond the channel, in the longitudinal direction, the bent sides are splayed outwardly and then downwardly, the leading edges of the downwardly extending sides being provided with cutting edges 5a and trailing edges 9. A driving collar 10 secured to a rectangular metal plate 12 that is a close fit in the channel portion 6, is designed to cooperate with the drive shaft 11 and securing means such as keying or tapering are provided. Blade 1 and the driving collar 10 are tightened to the drive shaft by thread 16 and nut 17 or by a bolt passing into a threaded portion of the shaft (not shown). The ends of the blade may be formed at an angle from the right angle to the longitudinal axis so that leading edge 5a projects further from the centre than the trailing edge.
