Abstract

1,182,946. Metal strip guides. DAVY & UNITED ENG. CO. Ltd. 28 June, 1968 [30 March, 1967], No. 14489/67. Headings B3E and B3W. Metal strip 1, particularly when being fed from an uncoiler to a winding head, is guided by blocks 2, with antifriction faces, which are spring- or hydraulically-loaded toward each other, and edge guides 3 comprising rollers 6 (or balls) spaced apart by and freely rotatable in links 8 forming a cage which is caused to travel around a support 7 by contact with the moving strip. The cage is tensioned by a spring-loaded portion 10 of the support 7. In another form of edge-guide balls freely mounted in side-by-side contacting relationship are moved round an endless track on the perimeter of the support 7 during travel of the strip. The guide blocks 2 are curved at the entry and exit ends to avoid nipping the strip.
