Abstract

1,182,728. Polyepoxide adducts. CIBA Ltd. 11 April, 1968 [19 April, 1967], No. 17693/68. Heading C3B. Internally plasticized adducts containing epoxide groups are prepared by reacting a polyepoxide, at elevated temperature, with 0.02 to 0.5 equivalents of carboxyl groups per epoxide equivalent of a carboxyl terminated polyester of formula HOOC.A.COOH. A is a polyester residue containing alkylene chains and carboxylic acid ester groups in which the quotient Z/Q, where Z is the number of carbon atoms in the recurring unit of A and Q is the number of oxygen bridges in the recurring unit of A, is at least 4; the total number of carbon atoms in the hydrocarbon groups of A is at least 50. Examples of suitable polyepoxides are: 3,4- epoxycyclohexylmethyl - 3<SP>1</SP>,4<SP>1</SP> - epoxycyclohexane carboxylate and its 6,6<SP>1</SP>- dimethyl derivative; 3,4 - epoxyhexahydrobenzal - 3<SP>1</SP>,4<SP>1</SP>- epoxycyclohexane - 1<SP>1</SP>,1<SP>1</SP> - dimethanol; triglycidyl isocyanurate; N,N<SP>1</SP> - diglycidyldimethylhydantoin; and conventional polyglycidyl ethers and esters. Suitable polyesters may have the formula in which R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are branched or unbranched alkylene or alkenylene chains such that the number of the carbon atoms in R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> together is at least 8 and m is such that the product of m and the sum of the carbon atoms in R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> is at least 50. An example of a suitable polyester is one prepared from 11 moles of sebacic acid and 10 moles of 1,6-hexanediol. The adducts may be cured with conventional epoxy resin hardeners.
