Abstract

1,182,705. Pyridines. LUMMUS CO. 19 Sept., 1967 [21 Sept., 1966], No. 42680/67. Heading C2C. Pyridine and/or alkyl-substituted pyridines are produced by the condensation of ammonia with an aldehyde in the vapour phase in a reaction zone containing a fluidized catalyst bed, the ammonia and aldehyde vapour being simultaneously introduced into the reaction zone so that they are mixed only in the presence of the fluidized catalyst. The preferred aldehydes are formaldehyde and acetaldehyde and the preferred catalysts are dehydrating catalysts such as silica gel, alumina or silicaalumina.
