Abstract

[Also in Divisions F2, G1 and H1] To locate helically, laid paper insulated cores of a power cable 4, markings on an outer sheath 10, preferably of P.V.C., correspond to the position of the cores 5, 6, 7. The cores are insulated by impregnated paper 8 and are surrounded by a screening conductor 9. The markings are made preferably by embossing the sheath 10 as it leaves an extrusion press 12, and is still soft, by-passing the cable 4 through a marking head 13 comprising rollers 14, 15, 16 which are spring-biased against and rotate about the cable 4 with such a speed that the marking has the same length of lay as the cores. Alternatively, the sheath 10 may be inked, painted scribed or taped. The head 13 is coupled to a D.C. split-field motor 19 by means of cogs 20, 21 or a belt 43 tensioned by a spring 48. The apparatus shown in Fig. 3 provides a spring, damped support for the head 13 so that adverse effects caused by bucking of cable 4 are avoided.
