Abstract

1,182,341. Dishwashing machines. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 20 Feb., 1967 [30 March, 1966], No. 7969/67. Heading A4F. [Also in Division D1] An automatic washing machine for dishes, clothes, or the like, and having a sequence control system for regulating the washing operations, includes a water softener having an ion exchange resin chamber for softening water passed to a wash chamber and means for regenerating the ion exchange resin during the terminal portion of the washing cycle. The described dishwashing machine comprises a motor 20 controlled by a cam actuated switch 72 which in one position energizes a start winding 76 so that the motor 20 rotates in a direction to drive a pump 21 (Fig. 1, not shown) in a direction for supplying washing liquid to a rotary spray arm. In a second position the switch 72 energizes a start winding 77 to cause the motor and pump to rotate in a direction such as to propel the washing liquid to a drain. Switches 68 to 73 are actuated by a timer motor 61 so that a dishwashing cycle is performed comprising (a) an initial flush period during which a solenoid 48 opens a water inlet valve 46 (not shown) and the motor 20 is operated to discharge water to drain (b) a fill period wherein the valve (46) is opened to admit water to the wash chamber via the water softener 30 (Fig. 2) (c) a rinse period during which the pump 21 passes water to the spray arm (d) a drain period (e) a fill period (f) a wash period during which detergent is added to the water (g) a drain period (h) two rinse periods (i) a drain period, and (j) a drying period during which a heating element 25 in the washing chamber is energized by the switch 70. At the initial portion of the drying period the switch 69 engages a solenoid 49 to open a valve 47 (not shown) to pass water through a container for regenerating agent (sodium chloride), a conduit 60, and the resin chamber 32 of the water softener 30 which is of the construction described in Specification 1,182,342. The valve 47 is opened for a time to allow the resin chamber 32 to fill with regenerating solution, and it then closed for a period after which a second charge is admitted and the first flows into the reservoir 42. The two charges remain until flushed from the water softener at the commencement of a fresh washing cycle.
