Abstract

1,182,218. Stopper rods. VESUVIUS CRUCIBLE CO. 20 Sept., 1968 [28 March. 1968], No. 44943/68. Heading F4B. The stopper rod head of a molten metal ladle or tundish is coated with a friable refractory material which will disintegrate when subjected to tensile and/or shear stresses. In use, the coating alone breaks up due to the resistance of the surrounding " frozen " metal when the stopper rod is raised, thus avoiding damage to the rod head proper. The one quarter inch thick coating, which is applied by brushing, spraying or dipping comprises a refractory powder such as magnesia, dolomite, magnesite, mullite, fused or unfused silica, calcined or uncalcined high alumina fireclay, titania, zirconia, zircon, graphite, clay-graphite mixtures, silicon carbide or chromite, mixed with a binder such as dextrose ligno-sulphonate, starch or phosphoric acid, to form a slurry mortar, dip coat or wash.
