Abstract

1,181,606. Sewing-machines. SINGER CO. 21 May, 1968, No. 24047/68. Heading D1G. A sewing machine needle bar is oscillated by a stack of edge cams 41, 42, 43 which are all read by a single follower 56 and the phase angle of the cams can be altered to vary the switch formation. The variation is produced by rotation of the thumbwheel 80 fixed to the top cam 43 which rotates the cam 43 through a green angle and, through an intermediate member 64 (not shown), rotates the cam 42 through half that angle, both relative to the cam 41- thus changing from the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 to that in Fig. 3(c) and varying from simple zig-zag to the stitch shown in Fig. 9. Either stitch can be selectively held by a spring catch 82 which engages slots in the top of the thumbwheel. Field and amplitude control: The needle-bar moving pitman 24 is moved by a frame 29 pivoted at 30 and the amplitude control is provided by an angled slot 36 in a plate 37 fixed to the pitman 20 that on movement of the lever 38 the pitman is moved relative to the pivot 30 along the frame 29. To vary the field the pivot 30 is rotated about the pivot 32 by the lever 39. Seams: As shown in Fig. 9 a zig-zag stitch is formed after every three straight stitches.
