Abstract

In a compressed-air braking system of a rail vehicle there is provided, in addition to the usual brake control valve 6 which responds to pressure in brake pipe 5 to control the supply of air from a reservoir 7 to a brake cylinder 12 and its exhaust to atmosphere, a relay valve 9 of known type which, in response to a signal from a skid-sensing device (not shown), exhausts air from the brake cylinder 12 via a retaining valve 14, the retaining valve being either of the kind, shown in Fig. 2, which includes a piston 20 by which pressure in excess of a predetermined minimum value overcomes a spring 23 to open exhaust valve 22, or a non-return valve having a spring to control the residual pressure (Fig. 3, not shown), the spring in either case being adjustable by rotation of a threaded shaft 24 screwed into the valve housing and bearing a head 26 for manual adjustment.
