Abstract

Apparatus for de-burring butt-welded wires, chainlinks &c. comprises at least one knife holder 20 reciprocable in the direction 21 and rotatable through about 180 degrees, and a knife 28 mounted on the offset free end portion of the holder and having two cutting edges, one edge 31 cutting across the weld ridge during longitudinal movement and the second cutting edge 29 trimming off the weld ridge from half the periphery of the wire &c. during rotary movement of the holder. The reciprocating movement is piston- and cylinder-actuated and the rotary movement is transmitted by rack and pinion (24), (25), Fig. 2 (not shown), the initial power source may be a cam-shaft of the apparatus. Preferably two knives are arranged as shown so that each trims off half the weld ridge. Alternatively the wire &c. can be rotated between successive cuts from a single knife. In a second embodiment Fig. 6 (not shown), two knife holders are in telescopic relation to each other, the offset knife-carrying end of one holder being offset to a greater degree than the other to allow for relative movement between them.
