Abstract

1,181,056. Recording and playback. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 20 Nov., 1968 [15 Jan., 1968], No. 54984/68. Addition to 1,180,885. Heading G5R. A helical-scan tape recorder of the type described in Specification 1,180,885, in which a section of tape being scanned is held stationary while the tape in general is advanced, is further provided with means for regulating the amount of tape in the second buffer cavity (43) which receives the tape as it leaves the helical path. As described, during playback the input section (30, Fig. 2) of the vacuum capstan (35) is enlarged by the addition of a cap (38) to raise the input speed of the tape into the helix above its output speed, so that the second buffer cavity (43) always contains some tape in order to prevent fluctuations in the speed of the tape round the helix from being transmitted to the region beyond the second buffer cavity (43) where the tape passes a fixed audio head (67). The presence in the buffer cavity (43) of a predetermined length of tape is detected by a photo-electric device (66, 66a) which causes the tape helix to be held stationary for the duration of one revolution of the rotary video head (11).
