Abstract

Contacts 5 are retained in bores in an insulating housing 3 by resilient rings 21 which are wedged into grooves 8 in the contacts 5 by forward movement of a rear insulating block 13. The block 13, a resilient cable grip 23, a washer 27 and a pressure ring 25 are surrounded by a sleeve 18 which threadably engages an outer casing 1 secured to the housing 3. As shown, each ring 21 is split and of circular cross-section wire, and is pushed into its contact groove 8 by the forward edge of a boss 14 on the block 13. In modifications, further rings (122, Figs. 5-8, not shown) or cylinders (123, Fig. 9, not shown) are located at the forward surface of the rear block (114 or 113), and the rings 21 are replaced by split cylindrical collars (29, Figs. 10-12, not shown). In another embodiment (Figs. 13 and 14, not shown) split cylindrical collars (29), which replace the rings 21, together with surrounding insulating sleeves (57) are located in bores (75) in a rear insulating block (63), and socket contacts (55) extend through the bores (75) and through bores (65) in a forward insulating housing (53). As the block (63) and housing (53) are drawn together by a screw (59), the contacts (55) move forwardly and chamfered cylinders (61), located in the bores (65), deflect the forward ends of the split cylinders (29) into grooves in the contacts (55). In a modification (Figs. 15-18, not shown) the rear ends of the split cylinders (129) have tabs (132) which engage shoulders (133) in the rear block (113).
