Abstract

[Also in Division G2] The apparatus disclosed in Specification 1,068,856 is modified in that the characters are carried on a drum 132, Fig. 1, and includes a field-flattening lens to view the curved 40- degree arc projection area as if it were flat. The characters are carved on matrix segments, each comprising a film strip 78, Fig. 12, consisting of two halves fitting into apertures 93 in a frame 76, and the characters are arranged in three rows 136, 138, 140 of different styles. The matrices may comprise chips 91, Fig. 14. The segments are locked on the drum by extensions 218, Fig. 19, of a locking ring 216 engaging extensions 84 of the segments. The light source is a cathode-ray tube 106, the beam of which is diverted horizontally to the desired position in the projection area to select the position on the film 8, and vertically to select the row under the control of a coded tape. The film is moved between lines under the control of two stepping motors, and is also moved in the same dimension in either direction as required to bring a character in any row and of any point size on to the same base line. The face plate of the tube is provided with optical fibres arranged to extend to a position adjacent the surface 17 of the drum and shaped as shown in Figs. 7, 8 or 10 at 18, 27 or 30, 31 or, as in Fig. 9, a lenticular plate 29 is placed adjacent the fibre optics face plate to produce rays of collimated light 38, and a lens 28 produces an image at 158. A block of optical fibres 32, Fig. 11, is provided adjacent the drum surface 17 towards the film plane 3 to project any point 15<SP>1</SP> of the surface to a point 16<SP>1</SP> of a flat surface.
