Abstract

1,180,682. Impregnating wood. MO-OCH DOMSJO A.B. 1 July, 1968 [3 July, 1967; 6 Dec., 1967], No. 31280/68. Heading D1P. In the impregnation of wood having a moisture content of up to 80% with a solution of a water-soluble polyalcohol or an ester or ether thereof, the treatment comprises (a) subjecting the wood to a pressure of 1.2-15 atmos. for at least 2 minutes, (b) immersing the wood in a solution of the impregnant while maintaining the pressure, (c) increasing the pressure by 1-20 atmos. and maintaining the increased pressure for 0.5-8 hr, (d) relieving the pressure, (e) removing excess solution, and (f) applying a reduced pressure of 0.05-0.5 atmos. 5-35% of impregnant may be absorbed. Room or elevated temperature and an aqueous or organic solvent solution may be employed. The solution may also contain a surface active agent and a synthetic resin or polymerisable compound. The synthetic resin may be ammonium or sodium polyacrylate or urea-, melamine- or phenol-formaldehyde. Polymerisation may be effected by γ- radiation.
