Abstract

1,180,228. Tractor-semi-trailer couplings. FINE FARE Ltd. 12 Oct., 1967 [18 Aug., 1966], No. 37056/66. Heading B7T. A semi-trailer coupling is mounted on a motor tractor 2 and comprises a fifth-wheel plate 7 which may be raised and lowered (so as to raise and lower the front end of the semi-trailer off its landing wheels) by an hydraulic jack 4 (or jacks) acting on a U -shaped beam 1 on which the plate 7 is pivotally carried, and a king-pin locking plate 10 which is spring-urged upwards to substantially fill the king-pin slot 8 when the plate 7 is raised but in the lowered position of the beam is held down (to allow the king-pin into the recess) by a vacuum cylinder 11 and linkage 12 which automatically releases the plate 10 after the beam 1 has been slightly raised. The jack or jacks 4 are supplied with fluid by an electrically-driven pump supplied by batteries charged by generators or alternators driven by the tractor motor. Upper and lower limit microswitches and a lock safety switch control the pump and a warning horn, and a height indicator in the cab comprises a row of lights connected to a vertical row of microswitches.
