Abstract

[Also in Divisions B7; B8; Fl; F2 and F3] Pressure vessels such as chemical reaction vessels are made by a process comprising forming a fibre glass vessel 6 with an annular member 10 embedded therein, parting the vessel along the centre line of the annular member, removing the severed annular member leaving two portions of the vessels with an annular slot in the ends of each of the portions, inserting at least one element (16) in the slots, reassembling the vessel portions with their slotted end faces in abutting engagement, forming holes through each of the vessel portions and the element, and inserting connecting means 20, 22 in the holes to hold the vessel 6 together. The glass fibres which are coated with an epoxy resin are spirally wound to form a vessel on a removable mandrel. The wall is thickened in the region of the annular member by winding in metal foil, wire, ceramic filaments or glass fabric. The annular member 10 is made of rubber, or of a material which can be dissolved or melted out of the wall. The element 16 comprises a hoop or series of tabs made of metal or plastics.
