Abstract

1,179,720. Punching. BENDIX CORP. 7 Dec., 1967 [12 Dec., 1966], No. 55676/67. Heading B3W. A device for positioning continuous strip 24 relative to a stamping press comprises at least one strip engaging device which is urged against the serpentine edges of the strip when the feed rollers 32 are disengaged and serves to move the strip so that it is aligned with the press. Each device 72, 74 has a pair of rollers 170, 172 mounted on bearings between U- shaped supports 148, 156. The supports are aligned by pins 164 and held together by bolts 162. The upper support 148 is welded to a pair of arms 138, (140), Fig. 2 (not shown), which are pivoted on a block 88 overhanging the strip edge. The supports are urged against the edge by a piston 112 slidable in a cylindrical chamber 102. The feed rollers 32 are continuously driven and the upper rollers are raised from the strip by a piston-cylinder assembly 42, 44, Fig. 5 (not shown), through a lever linkage (36). The assembly and the chambers 102 are connected to a control valve 56 which selectively supplies pressurized fluid to lines 48, 50. The valve is controlled by an arm 196 reciprocated by a crank on a shaft 202 which rotates in synchronism with the ram of the press. The fluid circuit is connected such that the piston 112 forces the rollers 170, 172 against the edges simultaneously with the raising of the feed rollers 132. One of the devices may be held away from the edge if the strip only has one serpentine edge.
