Abstract

[Also in Divisions B8 and Fl] A fuel vapour emission control system for a motor vehicle powered by an internal combustion engine comprises a fuel tank 14 having a sealed filler cap 16, a vent tube 17 from the tank and a liquid trap 19 which collects fuel that condenses in the tube 17. The latter includes a small bore portion 18 between the tank 14 and trap 19 and a larger bore portion 20 connecting the trap 19 to the air cleaner 12 of a downdraught carburetter 13 supplying to the engine 10 fuel pumped from tank 14. The bottom wall 21 of the air cleaner 12 is formed with a well 22 disposed within the filter element 27. The vent tube 17, a carburetter float chamber vent 23 and a crankcase breather 24 are all connected to the well 22. The latter includes a flame trap 28 in the form of a gauze or fine wire mesh to prevent ignition of fuel vapour in tube 17 in the event of an engine back-fire. The liquid trap 19 is disposed at the lowest point of the tube 17 in front of the toeboard 25 of the vehicle body 11.
