Abstract

1,179,586. Heating, cooling and drying granular &c. materials. N. J. STEVENS. 16 May, 1967, No. 22575/67. Heading F4U. Materials in granular, pasty or slurry form are heated or cooled by hollow discs which are mounted for rotation in the material on hollow shafts through which heat transfer fluid is introduced for circulation through the discs. As shown, the discs 24 are spaced along hollow shafts 22 which extend transversely to the longitudinal axis of an enclosure 10. The discs on adjacent shafts are mutually off-set and arranged in inter-meshing relationship; vanes 48 on the discs advance the material from one end of the enclosure to the other. Heat transfer fluid is supplied to the discs from pipes 39 within the shafts by radial pipes 38 and returns through pipes 43 to the interior of the shaft. The bottom of the enclosure may be shaped to conform closely to the periphery of the discs. For batch operation vanes 48 are omitted and in a first modification (Fig. 4, not shown) the discs are of different sizes and are driven at different speeds. In a further modification (Figs. 5 to 7, not shown) the longitudinal axis of the enclosure is vertical, and the material flows therethrough solely by gravity and is fluidized by air from nozzles within the enclosure.
