Abstract

1,179,512. Jib cranes; counterbalancing apparatus. SCHWERMASCHINENBAU S.M. KIROW VEB. 4 July, 1967, No. 30835/67. Heading B8B. A crane comprises an upper carriage 2 carrying a jib and rotatably mounted on an undercarraige 1, and a counterweight 3 which is releasably carried by an end of the carriage 2 when the crane is operating and at least part of which is carried by an end of the carriage 1 when the crane is travelling, wherein when the carriage ends are adjacent that of the undercarriage does not project beyond that of the upper carriage. Counterweight supports 4 are pivotally mounted on the undercarriage so that they can be swung into slots in the latter for crane operation and they have pins for engaging apertures in the lowest weight of the counterweight. The top weight on the undercarriage has apertures 11 to permit illumination of the road by headlamps on the undercarriage. In a second embodiment, Figs. 6 to 9 (not shown), the counterweight is secured to a horizontally movable frame in the upper carriage. For crane travel, the frame is moved towards the undercarriage and the counterweight is released from the frame and fastened to an inclined support on the undercarriage. Wedges are used to clamp the frame when the crane is travelling. Alternatively, the frame is disposed on the undercarriage.
