Abstract

1,179,462. Coking coal. L. C. STEINMULLER G.m.b.H. 21 Feb., 1967 [21 Feb., 1966], No. 8164/67. Heading C5E. A method of simultaneously producing coke fines and coke breeze from a mixture of coal dust and coarser grains of coal comprises injecting a fluid mixture (gas or oil) of the dust and grains through at least one nozzle 3 in the upper part of a shaft 1, and injecting heating gas at two levels into the shaft, (a) at 5, at the level of the nozzle 3, and (b) at 10 near the bottom of the shaft. The gas velocities are regulated so that fine coked material is carried up out of the top of the shaft and coarser material falls down the shaft to form a fluidized bed 11 at the base. Gas is circulated as shown through a cooler 18 to a cooling zone 13 for breeze 14, and through the shaft via the inlets 5, 10, where it is mixed with the heating gases which have been preheated to about 1200‹ C. The coke fines may be cooled by surfaces 34 in the shaft, or by plates or tubes (32) in a hopper 8, see Fig. 3 (not shown), or by contact with a branch of the recycled gas which has been cooled, the reheated gas being returned to the shaft as heating gas or as the fluid carrier for the coal. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the shaft 1 and zone 13 are laterally offset, and means for cooling the fines are described. Residence times of 5 seconds for the fines and 10 seconds for the breeze are mentioned.
